Our previous AED Hunt competition in Singapore, a world’s first, began on 13th March 2010 and ended on 21st March 2010.
The prize for the top AED seeker was this!

And the winner was…

Kenneth P with 31 points! He has geotagged 25 AED locations! This is about 10% of all AEDs known in Singapore!
Jimmy T has 18 points. He has helped with 10 AED locations.
Philip L has 2 points. He has helped with 2 AED locations.
Interview with Kenneth our first winner.
Q : How easy was it to use “AED Nearby” to locate the nearest AED?
A : It was easy enough to get the rough location. However, not all AEDs are adequately labelled, so it took a fair amount of leg work to find some of the AEDs, especially since they might not be located on ground level.
Q : Was loading the app fast enough?
A : Yes, it is.
Q : What did you like about the app?
A : It’s simple, uncluttered and does what it says: highlighting locations of AEDs nearby.
Q : What did you not like about the app?
A : Some of the AED locations do not indicate where in the building the AEDs are located, but that’s not the app’s fault.
Q : Knowing that the time needed to save a life from cardiac arrest death is under 5 minutes, are the number of AEDs around the city adequate?
A : Definitely not. While some building are adequately covered – Wisma Atria, for example, has AEDs on every shopping level in easy-to-find locations – many buildings do not even have a single AED.
Q : When you were in an area with AEDs, how much time on average did it take you to reach one?
A : This really depends on the building, and whether I knew in advance where to look. Generally, they are located at security counters, information counters or near escalators. I think I took an average of two minutes to find an AED once I was in a building in town.
Q : In your opinion, will such an app help to improve the survival rate in public, knowing that the survival from using an AED increases the chance to approx 70%?
A : It certainly will not decrease the chances of survival! The app on its own will not do much to increase the survival rate in public. Many other factors need to be considered in tandem: awareness of AEDs, whether people who are aware know there is such an app (if they have iPhones) and whether they are near an AED when someone collapses. A lot more needs to be done, but we will get there slowly.
Q : Have you been trained in CPR, AED or both before?
A : Yes, I have Heartsaver CPR and CPR+AED certification. I am currently in the process of attaining CPR+AED instructor certification.
Q : Even if you are not trained in CPR or AED, do you believe you can still help in the chain of survival by geotagging AED locations for the data to be fed into the AED Nearby app?
A : Yes, people can definitely can help even if they do not know how to do CPR or use the AED. Knowing where to locate an AED and bringing it to the site is very important as every second counts in the chain of survival.
Q : How much time on average did it take you to geotag an AED location?
A : In the city, it took about 2 minutes to geotag as it was accurate to within 20 metres or so. Geotagging the locations in NUS was a lot more difficult because the GPS function does not work well around the western end of Kent Ridge Campus at all. The given locations were always off by at least 50m. Also, the map provided does not have outlines of the buildings in NUS! So it took a lot longer to geotag those AED locations manually. I have to say that it involved a lot of estimation on my part.
We thank all our Seekers for their time and efforts to help make our city a safer place.
We documented the competition progress in the Facebook event page.
